5 simple points to improve your search rankings

We know that SEO is not simple anymore and requires a professional with a deep knowledge of the subject to do it properly, but there are a number of things that all website owners should know to make sure they get the best possible results from their website.

1. Make sure you have Social Media Profiles

Social media is becoming a larger part of our day to day lives and is also becoming a larger part of the search engine mix. Every reputable company will have Twitter and Facebook profiles at a minmum and an absence of this can reduce your reputation score. We would also suggest a Google+ Profile as you want to keep Google on your side.


2. Update content regularly

When was the last time you changed the content on your website? If it’s more than 2 weeks ago then you could be in trouble. Google has always liked sites that have good interesting content added on a regular basis. This simple change can transfer the results for some websites.


3. Don’t Spam!

This might sound obvious to some, but you would be surprised how many people believe that creating 10,000 spam links to your website is somehow going to improve your rankings. To put it simply it will have the opposite effect and could end up throwing your website down the rankings faster than a sinking stone.


4. Be Original

A lot of people will try to add content to their site that is not their own. If you are using an article written by someone else, even if you reference them and link back to the original article at best this will have no positive impact on your rankings and at worst could make Google think that your site has no value and kick it down the rankings.


5. Beware of Canonical Issues

For those of you who don’t know, this is where your web pages can be referenced in more than one way (eg. and Where possible, multiple URL references to the same page should be avoided, but if they cannot or if you just want to be cautious then every page of your website should include a canonical tag that tells Google which is the correct URL and forces them to ignore duplicates. This can have a dramatic effect on poorly programmed websites.
